Gibraltar Monkeys & Skywalk
The Barbary macaques are Gibraltar’s most famous wildlife attraction and the only wild monkey population in Europe. They live across the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in family groups known as troops, with the Ape’s Den being one of the best-known areas for observing them.
During our Gibraltar Tours, we visit the macaques at the Top of the Rock, where you can see these fascinating animals in their natural environment and learn more about their behaviour, social structure and history on the Rock.
The macaques, also known locally as rock apes, are highly intelligent and live in close-knit groups where grooming and social interaction play an important role. Their name comes from the Barbary Coast of North Africa, reflecting their natural origins.
A well-known Gibraltar legend claims that during the Second World War the macaque population fell to just seven animals, prompting Sir Winston Churchill to order that the population be increased. The story is closely associated with the long-standing belief that Gibraltar would remain British for as long as the macaques remained on the Rock. While the legend has become an important part of Gibraltar folklore, the history of the population is more complex.
When visiting the macaques, it is important to respect their natural behaviour. Visitors should never feed them, should keep bags and belongings secure, avoid approaching or touching them, and follow the instructions of their guide. Gibraltar Skywalk Glass Viewing Platform
The Gibraltar Skywalk is one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the Upper Rock. Located approximately 340 metres above sea level, the glass viewing platform provides panoramic views across Gibraltar, the Strait of Gibraltar and, on a clear day, Ceuta and Morocco in North Africa.
The Skywalk extends over the eastern side of the Rock, creating a dramatic glass platform beneath your feet. It is an impressive stop on our Gibraltar Tours and offers excellent opportunities for photographs while taking in the surrounding landscape.
The Gibraltar Skywalk was officially opened in 2018 by actor Mark Hamill, best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films, making the occasion particularly memorable for the territory!
