The Pillars of Hercules

One of the first highlights of the tour is the Pillars of Hercules, located at the southern tip of Gibraltar. From here, you can enjoy spectacular views across the Strait of Gibraltar towards North Africa and Morocco.

Gibraltar Tours Pillars of Hercules

From the Pillars of Hercules, you can see where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. The Strait of Gibraltar is the only natural sea entrance to the Mediterranean, making this one of the most important geographical locations in the region.

St Michael's Cave

Next, we will visit St. Michael’s Cave, one of Gibraltar’s most impressive natural attractions. Thousands of visitors explore its spectacular caverns every year, making it one of Gibraltar’s most popular attractions.

Gibraltar Tours St Michaels Cave

The cave was formed over millions of years as rainwater slowly seeped through the limestone rock. The water became a weak carbonic acid, gradually dissolving the limestone and creating the impressive formations and caverns you see today.

In 2021, St. Michael’s Cave introduced a new lighting and sound experience called The Awakening. The installation brings the natural beauty and history of the cave to life using immersive lighting, sound and projections.

Top of the Rock
Skywalk Glass Viewing Platform & Monkeys

We will then continue to the Top of the Rock, where you will experience two of Gibraltar’s most famous attractions: the Skywalk and the Barbary macaques.

Gibraltar Tours - The Skywalk

The Skywalk is a former military lookout that has been transformed into a state-of-the-art glass viewing platform. It provides spectacular 360-degree panoramic views across Gibraltar, the Mediterranean and towards North Africa.

From the Skywalk, it is just a short walk to the Upper Apes’ Den, where we will spend some time with Gibraltar’s famous Barbary macaques.

Gibraltar Tours - Gibraltar Macaque Monkeys

There are more than 200 Barbary macaques living on the Rock, divided into several social groups known as troops.

Gibraltar Tour - Monkeys

The macaques have become an important part of Gibraltar’s history and identity. One famous story tells how, during the Second World War, Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill was concerned about the declining population and ordered additional macaques to be brought to Gibraltar.

The Great Siege Tunnels

From the Top of the Rock, we will drive around to the northern side of Gibraltar to visit the historic Great Siege Tunnels.

Gibraltar Tours - The Great Siege Tunnels

The Great Siege Tunnels are one of Gibraltar’s most fascinating historical sites. The tunnels were excavated by hand through the limestone during the Great Siege of Gibraltar, which lasted from 1779 to 1783.

British forces carved the tunnels into the Rock to create defensive positions and allow artillery to be placed where it could target enemy forces. The Great Siege was an attempt by Spanish and French forces to recapture Gibraltar from the British.

Today, the tunnels provide a fascinating insight into Gibraltar’s military history and the enormous effort that went into defending the Rock.

Moorish Castle and Old Town of Gibraltar

As we drive down from the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, you will see the outside of the historic Moorish Castle.

The Moorish Castle is on the northern/north-western side of Gibraltar. Its origins date back to the Moorish occupation of Gibraltar, with the existing Tower of Homage dating largely from the 14th century.

Gibraltar Tours - Moorish Castle

The castle has played an important role throughout Gibraltar’s history and has seen numerous battles and sieges. As we pass by, you can see parts of the historic fortifications and the marks left by centuries of warfare.

After leaving the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, we will continue through Gibraltar’s Old Town, giving you a chance to see some of the historic streets and buildings.

The tour can finish wherever you wish in Gibraltar. If you would like to explore more of the town or visit Main Street after the tour, we can provide you with a map and recommendations on what to see in the pedestrianised areas, as well as guidance on the best way to return to your accommodation or destination.
