O'Hara's Battery, Gibraltar
O'Hara's Battery is located at the highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar, at 1,398 ft (426 m) above sea level, near the southern end of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and close to Lord Airey's Battery. It was constructed in 1890 on the site of a former watchtower, which had become known as O'Hara's Folly.
Both the battery and the original watchtower were named after Charles O'Hara, who served as Governor of Gibraltar. The first gun installed at the battery was a 6-inch breech-loading gun, which was later replaced in 1901 by a much larger 9.2-inch Mark X BL gun.
O'Hara's Battery remained an important part of Gibraltar's coastal defences and was in use during the Second World War. The gun was last fired during training exercises in 1976.
The battery has recently undergone refurbishment and improvements and is now open to the public, offering visitors a fascinating insight into Gibraltar's military history as well as spectacular views from one of the highest points on the Rock.
