With your own personal guide, you’ll explore some of the Rock’s most significant sights, discover the people and events that have shaped Gibraltar over the centuries, and encounter its famous Barbary macaques along the way. The Pillars of Hercules
Our tour begins at the Pillars of Hercules, one of Gibraltar’s most spectacular viewpoints.
From here, enjoy views across the Strait of Gibraltar towards the coast of Morocco, where Europe and Africa are separated by just a few miles. You can also look across the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, with Europa Point visible below.
St Michael's Cave
Next, we visit the spectacular St Michael’s Cave, one of Gibraltar’s most famous natural attractions.
The cave was formed over millions of years as rainwater filtered through the limestone, gradually dissolving the rock and creating its impressive chambers and formations.
In 2021, St Michael’s Cave introduced The Awakening, an immersive light and sound experience designed to enhance the natural beauty of the cavern. The installation combines lighting, sound and projections to create a dramatic experience within the ancient cave.
Top of the Rock with Skywalk Glass Viewing Platform & Monkeys
We then continue to the Upper Rock, where you’ll experience the Skywalk and spend time with Gibraltar’s famous Barbary macaque monkeys!
The Skywalk is a spectacular glass viewing platform offering uninterrupted 360° views across Gibraltar, the Mediterranean, the Strait and towards North Africa. Built on the site of a former military lookout, it provides a unique perspective from high on the Rock.
From the Skywalk, it’s a short walk to the Upper Apes’ Den, where we’ll spend some time observing Gibraltar’s famous Barbary macaques.
Gibraltar is home to more than 200 macaques living in several social groups across the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. They are the only wild monkeys found in Europe.
A popular Gibraltar legend tells how, during the Second World War, the macaque population fell to just seven. It is said that Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill ordered that the population be replenished, as the monkeys were considered closely linked to the future of Gibraltar.
The Great Siege Tunnels
From the Upper Rock, we drive to the north side of Gibraltar to explore the remarkable Great Siege Tunnels.
This site explains a lot of the history of Gibraltar under siege. The tunnels were carved out of the rock by hand during the Great Siege which took place between 1779-1783. This was done in order to defend Gibraltar against the Spanish and French forces who were trying to recapture Gibraltar from the British.
The Moorish Castle
The castle is a striking reminder of Gibraltar’s Moorish past, with its famous Tower of Homage standing high on the northern side of Gibraltar of the Rock. Originally constructed during the Moorish period, the fortifications were later rebuilt and expanded following the Spanish reconquest.
The Tower of Homage remains one of Gibraltar’s most recognisable historic landmarks, with its imposing walls reflecting the many centuries of conflict and occupation that have shaped the Rock.
Europa Point & Views to Africa
We then continue to Europa Point, Gibraltar’s southernmost point.
From here, enjoy sweeping views across the Strait of Gibraltar towards the coast of Morocco, as well as views across Gibraltar Bay and the Spanish coastline. On a clear day, the African coastline is particularly impressive.
360º Drive Around Gibraltar's Coastline (Catalan Bay)
We’ll continue with a drive around Gibraltar’s coastline, taking in both the eastern and western sides of the Rock and stopping at viewpoints along the way.
The route includes Catalan Bay, the eastern coastline, areas of Jurassic sand deposits and the historic water catchments, giving you the opportunity to see parts of Gibraltar away from the main tourist sights.
Airport Runway
Towards the end of the tour, we drive through the Kingsway Tunnel beneath Gibraltar International Airport, emerging close to the Spanish border.
If you wish, you can also walk across Gibraltar’s famous airport runway for one of the Rock’s most unusual experiences.
The tour can finish wherever you choose in Gibraltar. If you’d like to explore the town and Main Street afterwards, we can provide a map and guidance on the main sights, pedestrianised areas and the best route back to your destination.
