St Michael's Cave, Gibraltar
St Michael’s Cave is the most famous and most visited of the more than 150 caves discovered within the Rock of Gibraltar. Located over 300 metres above sea level, this spectacular natural attraction has welcomed millions of visitors and remains one of the highlights of any Gibraltar Tour.
In 1942, during the Second World War, blasting was carried out inside St Michael’s Cave to improve ventilation, as plans were being considered to use the cave as an emergency hospital. During the work, a deeper network of previously unknown chambers was discovered, now known as Lower St Michael’s Cave.
The Awakening Experience
In 2021, St Michael’s Cave introduced The Awakening, an immersive light and sound experience designed to enhance the cave’s natural formations and atmosphere. Carefully projected lighting and sound bring the cavern to life, highlighting its remarkable geological features and the history surrounding this unique site.
St Michael’s Cave has fascinated visitors for thousands of years. The cave is associated with Gibraltar’s long human history, with evidence of visits by ancient peoples including the Phoenicians and Romans. Gibraltar was also inhabited by Neanderthals, with archaeological discoveries providing evidence of their presence on the Rock.
Inside the cave, visitors can explore impressive chambers containing stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years by the gradual deposition of minerals from dripping water.
Cathedral Cave & the Angel of St. Michael's Cave
The largest chamber is known as Cathedral Cave and is now used for concerts and special events, taking advantage of its exceptional natural acoustics and dramatic surroundings.
One of the cave’s most recognisable features is the Angel of St Michael’s Cave, a striking stalagmite formation that stands within the Cathedral Cave and has become an iconic symbol of St Michael’s Cave.
Outside the entrance and around the gift shop exit, you may also encounter Gibraltar’s famous Barbary macaques. Keep an eye on bags and food, as these cheeky residents are always interested in what visitors are carrying!
