Explore Gibraltar's Most Famous Cave
St Michael's Cave, Gibraltar
Of over the 150 caves that have been discovered in the Rock of Gibraltar this is the most visited with over one million visitors per year. The cave is situated at over 300 metres above sea level.
In 1942 during the second world war blasting was in process inside this cave in order to allow for more ventilation. The cave was to be used as an emergency hospital. During the blasting, a discovery was made of a deeper system of caves which is now known as Lower St. Michael’s Cave.

St. Michael’s Cave is a fascinating natural and historical site that has captured human imagination for thousands of years. The cave has been known since ancient times, with evidence suggesting that it was visited by the Phoenicians and Romans, and its surrounding area was once home to Neanderthals who lived in Gibraltar long before recorded history. Visitors can explore a series of chambers filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, formed over thousands of years by the slow dripping of mineral-rich water.

Cathedral Cave & the Angel of St. Michael's Cave
Today, the cave features educational displays that explain its geology and the many layers of human history connected to it. The largest chamber, known as the Cathedral Cave, now serves as a venue for concerts and events, offering stunning natural acoustics and lighting. At the heart of this space stands the Angel of St. Michael’s Cave, a striking stalagmite formation that has become the cave’s most famous centerpiece and a symbol of its enduring mystery and beauty!

You'll also see monkeys outside the entrance and near the gift shop exit. Be careful with bags and food as they can be a little bit cheeky!
