Built for the defence of Gibraltar
Gibraltar Tours
The 100 Ton Gun actually weighs just over 100 tons and is one of only two to still be around in the world today. Out of the four that were built in 1870, two of these giant guns were built for the defence of Gibraltar while the other two were built for Malta. The 100 Ton Gun now resides at Napier of Magdala Battery in Gibraltar which is a stop off point on some of our Gibraltar Tours.

The gun itself has a 32 feet long barrel and can fire a 2,000 pound shell that can reach a distance of 8 miles at a speed of 1,500 feet per second. This gave the gun the ability to penetrate just over 2 feet of iron.

Visitors also can enjoy the wandering through the museum, where exhibits bring the history of this powerful Victorian-era weapon to life. It is an ideal stop for anyone interested in Gibraltar’s military heritage, showcasing how the massive coastal gun once protected the Rock and the surrounding seas.

Southern Most Point with Views to Africa
Gibraltar Tours
Europa Point is the southernmost tip of Gibraltar and one of the stops on some of our Gibraltar Tours. It is a place where history, culture, and breathtaking natural beauty come together. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy incredible panoramic views across the Strait of Gibraltar, with the coast of Africa clearly visible on a clear day.

One of the main attractions at Europa Point is the striking Trinity Lighthouse, built in 1841. This historic lighthouse still guides ships entering the Mediterranean and remains a symbol of Gibraltar’s maritime heritage.

Nearby stands the Sikorski Memorial, dedicated to General Władysław Sikorski, the Polish leader who tragically died in a plane crash off Gibraltar in 1943. The memorial is an important reminder of Gibraltar’s role during the Second World War. Visitors can also explore Harding’s Battery, a restored 19th-century artillery installation that once formed part of Gibraltar’s coastal defences.

Today, the site offers educational exhibits and spectacular sea views. Europa Point is not only rich in history but also a perfect location for photography and reflection. Whether admiring the views toward North Africa, visiting its historic landmarks, or simply enjoying the sea breeze, Europa Point remains an essential destination on any Gibraltar Tour.

From the Moorish Occupation 711 to 1309 and then again from 1333 to 1462
Gibraltar Tours
The Moorish Castle is one of Gibraltar’s most important historical landmarks and a key stop on some of our Gibraltar Tours. The first fortifications on this site were built around 1160 AD, or possibly earlier, during the Islamic period. These early structures were later destroyed when the Spanish re-conquered Gibraltar between 1309 and 1333.

The castle’s main feature, the Tower of Homage, rises above the hillside and commands the landward approach to Gibraltar. The existing tower was rebuilt in 1333 AD by Abu’l-Hassan of the Marinid dynasty after he recaptured Gibraltar from Spanish forces.
Throughout history, the Moorish Castle has endured numerous battles and sieges. The Tower of Homage still bears visible marks from centuries of conflict. One dramatic episode occurred when the Count of Niebla attacked the fortress but was captured by its defenders. His body was later displayed in a barcina, a net used for carrying straw, as a warning to future attackers.

During another siege, a Spanish governor resisted the Duke of Medina Sidonia for five months before the Duke seized Gibraltar from Queen Isabel of Spain. In 1540, hundreds of residents sought refuge inside the castle when Turkish pirates raided Gibraltar.
Historically, the lower castle extended down to Casemates Square, the Grand Battery, and the Old Mole. Part of the castle also served as Gibraltar’s prison until 2010, linking the medieval fortress with more recent times.

Today, the Moorish Castle remains a fascinating site for visitors taking part in Gibraltar Tours, offering insight into the Rock’s Islamic, Spanish, and British heritage.

Dug out from the solid limestone by the British during the Great Siege of Gibraltar
Gibraltar Tours
The Great Siege Tunnels in Gibraltar are among the most impressive examples of 18th-century military engineering, carved directly into the Rock of Gibraltar during the Great Siege of 1779 to 1783.
This siege took place during the American War of Independence, when Spain and France joined forces in an attempt to reclaim Gibraltar from Britain. Despite being heavily outnumbered and under continuous attack, the British defenders showed remarkable determination and creativity for victory.

In 1782, Sergeant-Major Henry Ince of the Royal Engineers proposed a daring plan to dig tunnels into the northern face of the Rock so that cannons could be positioned to fire on the Spanish lines below. Using only hand tools, black powder, and great effort, soldiers managed to excavate several hundred feet of tunnels within months, creating gun ports and chambers that transformed the cliffs into powerful defensive positions.

Today, a visit to the Great Siege Tunnels offers an extraordinary opportunity to experience the ingenuity and endurance that defined Gibraltar’s defense. The tunnels form what is often described as a fortress within a fortress, complete with cannon placements, lookout positions, and quarters hewn from solid limestone.
As visitors walk through these passages, they can explore original gun emplacements, historical displays about the siege, and stunning views across from the north of Gibraltar, all of which bring to life the dramatic history of this vital strategic stronghold.

the only wild monkey population on the European continent
Gibraltar Tours
The Barbary Macaques are the only wild monkeys to be found within the continent of Europe. They reside at the Upper Rock Nature Reserve of Gibraltar, at the Ape's Den. At present there are over 200 monkeys in 6 packs that roam through the Upper Rock. During our tours we visit them at the Top of the Rock!

Legend has it that in 1942 the population of apes fell to just 7 and the Prime Minister of Great Britain (Sir Winston Churchill) ordered that the population of the apes be immediately replenished because as long as there are Barbary Macaques Apes on the Rock of Gibraltar it will remain under British rule.
The wild Barbary macaques of Gibraltar are one of the territory’s most famous and fascinating attractions, but it is important to stay safe and respectful when near them. Visitors should always keep a safe distance, avoid direct eye contact, keep bags securely closed, and pay attention to any warning signs from the monkeys, such as sudden movements or vocal sounds. Our professional tour guides have years of experience ensuring that interactions with the macaques are safe, enjoyable, and provide fantastic photo opportunities without disturbing them.
The macaques (or rock apes as referred to locally) live in close-knit family groups that groom and care for one another. Their name, “Barbary macaque,” comes from the Barbary Coast of North Africa, where their ancestors originated. With the right guidance and respect, observing them in their natural habitat can be an unforgettable, unique experience.

Near to the Ape's Den, standing 340m directly above sea level, the Gibraltar Skywalk offers breath-taking 360º views spanning 3 countries and 2 continents. This is a fantastic place for photos from the Top of the Rock to admire the incredible views. If you're feeling brave you can walk on the glass viewing platform which is strong enough to hold 5 elephants!

Mark Hamill (who plays iconic character Luke Skywalker in Star Wars) officially opened The Skywalk in 2018 which was a special day in Gibraltar!

NEW Awakening Experience!
Gibraltar Tours
Of over the 150 caves that have been discovered in the Rock of Gibraltar this is the most visited with over one million visitors per year. The cave is situated at over 300 metres above sea level.
In 1942 during the second world war blasting was in process inside this cave in order to allow for more ventilation. The cave was to be used as an emergency hospital. During the blasting, a discovery was made of a deeper system of caves which is now known as Lower St. Michael’s Cave.

In 2021 St Michael's Cave introduced a new lighting upgrade for the very best experience of the caves natural beauty, called The Awakening. Enjoy St Michael's cave like never before!
An immersive light and sound installation expressing layer upon layer of history fused with the rock. The ancient cavern lays dormant. The Awakening illuminates sculptures older than time and reawakens their hidden story...
St. Michael’s Cave is a fascinating natural and historical site that has captured human imagination for thousands of years. The cave has been known since ancient times, with evidence suggesting that it was visited by the Phoenicians and Romans, and its surrounding area was once home to Neanderthals who lived in Gibraltar long before recorded history. Visitors can explore a series of chambers filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, formed over thousands of years by the slow dripping of mineral-rich water.

Today, the cave features educational displays that explain its geology and the many layers of human history connected to it. The largest chamber, known as the Cathedral Cave, now serves as a venue for concerts and events, offering stunning natural acoustics and lighting. At the heart of this space stands the Angel of St. Michael’s Cave, a striking stalagmite formation that has become the cave’s most famous centerpiece and a symbol of its enduring mystery and beauty!

You'll also see monkeys outside the entrance and near the gift shop exit. Be careful with bags and food as they can be a little bit cheeky!

Entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar
Gibraltar Tours
According to Greek mythology Hercules had to take on twelve tasks. One of these tasks was to bring the cattle of Geryon from the west to Eurytheus.

On his journey Hercules had to cross the Atlas Mountains. Rather than climbing over these mountains, he used his great strength to smash through them and as a result, he brought the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean together.
After he had achieved this task, the result was what is now known as The Pillars of Hercules. This became the Rock of Gibraltar on the northern side and Jebel Musa in Morocco on the southern side.
From the Pillars of Hercules, the views across the Strait of Gibraltar are truly awe-inspiring. On a clear day, the mountains of Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta can be seen across the narrow stretch of water, only about 13km, or 8 miles, wide at its closest point. This remarkable strait marks the natural boundary between Europe and Africa and forms the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

For centuries, it has held immense strategic importance, as control over the Strait of Gibraltar means command of one of the world’s most vital maritime passages, crucial for both trade and military navigation. The combination of views and historical significance makes the Pillars of Hercules a unique attraction to visit in Gibraltar.
